PRINCESS KAIULANI - A Film & Discussion

Sunday ~ January 11 ~ 2:00 - 5:00 pm at Sophia's Portico

Robert Louis Stevenson called her "the island rose" and, yes, she was a real princess! She was half Scottish, half Hawaiian, a talented musician and painter, educated in 5 languages, and loved by her people.  "Princess Ka'iulani" is a beautifully filmed account of the too-short life of Ka'iulani (she died at age 23), heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Hawaii before it was overthrown in 1893 and annexed to give advantage to United States businessmen. While the politics and history of this period are complex, the film focuses rather on the character and accomplishments of Ka'iulani. She was revered both in Hawaii and in Europe and the U.S. for her beauty and intelligence, as well as her courage in speaking out against the injustices to her land.  This film shows both her grace and her bravery as her tragic life unfolds.   Mele (songs) and hula are still composed honoring Ka'iulani as she continues to inspire Hawaiians and non-Hawaiians alike.

COST: $12

PRESENTER:  April Allen is a librarian at IPFW and a Jill-of-all-trades at Sophia's Portico.  She fell in love with Ka'iulani while living in Hawaii.

Sophia's Portico, Inc., established in 1992, is an art and spirituality center focusing on the development of the feminine through education, the arts and earth based spirituality.

Our education component consists of book discussions, workshops and presentations. In the area of arts, we sponsor an annual Winter Art Fair and "hands-on" programs. Art and spirituality inform one another and are integral in the development of the human person.

Our earth-based spirituality focuses on the celebration of the Winter and Summer Solstices, the Autumn and Spring Equinoxes and the cross quarter days of Imbolc, Beltane, Lammas and Samhain.  We are unique in this area as very few groups offer these celebrative opportunities.  We are inclusive of creeds, cultures, genders and races and seek to nurture spiritual growth in an atmosphere of peace, freedom, dignity and justice.

Sophia's Portico, Inc. is exempt from income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and qualifies for the 50% charitable contributions deduction limitation.  The Organization has been classified as an organization that is not a private foundation under Section 170(b)(1)(A)(vi) of the Internal Revenue Code.
